Lena Marie Kellar, 222 Parkview St., Plymouth, died of natural causes in Pilgrim Manor Nursing Center at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002. A Marshall County resident most of her life, she had lived at St. Paul?s Retirement Home in South Bend for seven years, moving to Pilgrim Manor in 1999.
Lena was 103 years old.
She was born in Bourbon, Ind., on May 5, 1899, the daughter of L.G. and Lorretta Matz Harley. She graduated from Washington High School, Plymouth, with the class of 1918.
On June 6, 1921, in St. Joe, Mich., Lena and James Earl Kellar were married. James died on April 15, 1967.
Prior to her marriage, Lena worked at the First National Bank in Plymouth.
She was thought of as a "first class housewife and mother" by her family. She loved to travel and had traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Her favorite overseas port was Greece.
A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Plymouth, Lena had received her 50 year pin from the Plymouth chapter of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by two sons: James Harley (Patricia) Kellar, Bloomington and John Earl Kellar, Granger, Ind.
Six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a sister, Dorothea Harley Kane, Coronado, Calif., together with four nieces and nephews survive as well.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, a daughter, Charlotte Kellar Rhoade, a brother, Russell Harley and a sister, Helen Agnes Harley.
A family services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at the Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. The Rev. Robert Berkey will officiate.
