Charlie Ray was the first adult I met at Culver Woodcraft camp. From the first day I met him I will always remember the warm smile, kind laugh and sweet disposition. I was a sacred child and he comforted me in a time of need. As an adult I valued him as a friend and knew how proud he was of his children and grandchildren. The world is a lesser place without him.

God bless you Charlie and may your memories carry your loved ones in this time of sorrow.

I am so very sorry for the loss of this wonderful man. I will never forget my discussion with him about the gifted program and our son’s participation (dropped out). I won’t go into details but he made me feel valued as a parent and teacher. That boy grew up to be a research scientist with a doctorate! And I so wish I could thank him again for that day and the advice he gave. Kind and wise. His impact never ends but reverberated in all the lives he touched. Sending love, light, and peace as we all celebrate a life well-lived. He will be missed.

Our deepest sympathy to Sue and the entire Ray family. We have nothing but fond memories of Charlie as a colleague, neighbor and friend. Some of our favorite times were standing on a warm evening in the neighborhood, talking about school and especially Woodcraft Camp. Charlie and Sue were always kind and caring to us. We will miss Charlie very much. All our love to Sue.

Charlie was our daughter, Hillary's, principal. We worked with him, in P.T.O., and many other events at Washington School. He talked Ren into being "Santa" for the kids. I couldn't believe it, when Ren said yes.

He was a good principal, but more importantly, he was a good man.

Most sincerely,
Ren and Beverly Van Gilder

I’m so sorry about Charlie. I so enjoyed working with him as the principal of Washington. Also, his intelligence and determination to bring the internet and educational programs to his school! It was so good for him, the children And the PCSC ! So innovative and determined to do so much for his students.

What a gifted individual and his sharing of those talents with the young and others

God Bless . My sympathy to all the family.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Ray’s passing. He was the principal at Washington when I was in elementary school. He went to bat for me several times during some issues with testing. He was a great principal and will be missed. My thoughts are with you all.

Mr Ray

You are an amazing person that I respected and looked up to as a little boy!! You helped install discipline in me and taught me to reach higher than I could ever imagine. You encouraged me to set up the mail system a pen pal service throughout the school. You always had a smile on your face and were extremely profesional. You will be missed

"What a kind man,. Loved life and loved kids."That's what my youngest son, Dan said when he heard the sad news of Charkie's passing.

We first met Maj. Rae in 1982 when we apprehensivly took our 9 y/o son to Culver. Within 5 minutes we were put at ease and made sure that our other two boys, Mike and Dan started in Div 6.

We would run into Charlie throuh the years at Winter School events and Family Camp and he was alwa so warm and genuine. As I told my kids and grandkids its a wonderful yet rare thing when someone can have such a great impact on so many lives.

He will be missed

Charlie was a true professional who spearheaded many new things in the Plymouth Schools. As a fairly new teacher, he helped me grow and learn new strategies in education so that I truly enjoyed coming to work every day. I was also blessed to have Kevin as a student! Charlie truly supported each and every member of our Washington family and made us, I feel, the best staff Plymouth ever had because we put kids first and and worked together as a family should. We went through the highs and lows that families have, but in the end we knew we were supported and loved. I was blessed to have worked and grow with Charlie.

To my mentor, my friend Charlie - I will miss you. Your dry humor, your kindness, your welcoming spirit, your knowledge, your leadership and your support of me and my family. I am incredibly honored to have met and worked with you, and your entire family. And I am humbled to have been so lucky to call you a friend. You are an amazing person, with so much love to give - it is everlasting.

To Charlie's family...please share my virtual hug. Many of my fondest memories of my time in the Midwest involved a Ray, or a Pirkle, or a Reeves. I won't ever forget. Charlie stayed in contact with me, all the way. That means so much to me I cannot even explain. I know you know of course. He stayed here with me in Colorado recently - to teach, to support, to share. My heart is sad for you, for your families, for Sue. Much love to you all.

Sue and all the Ray family:

The community has lost a true leader in the education area, and a very humanitarian individual. My direct connection was as the piano instructor for your children. Charles was supportive and pleased to see skills develop. You have much support here in addition to your faith. Please let us know how we can help you.
