Always the gentleman, I first met Sam when interviewing for my first job in South Bend Schools at Jackson Middle School. He was an individual who always chose his words wisely and I recall the intensity of his questioning at that interview. Ultimately, I was hired for the position and worked a a Science Teacher with Sam as our Assistant Principal. It was a challenging situation with a large number of "rookies" like myself for him to mentor & keep in line! Years later, Sam & I were both appointed to the local Library Board where we worked together to advance the cause of Libraries & Education. I recall our meetings where there were heated debates about various topics while Sam sat & analyzed the commentary... typically followed by a brief, to the point statement which cut immediately to the core of the issue. I learned early on that while Sam was a man of few words, it was well worth your while to listen carefully to the things he said! His contributions to the community were many & significant... R.I.P. old friend.

Dear Holmgren Family,

My most sincere sympathy to you on Sam's passing. He was a most caring and loving individual that I had worked with at Edison in South Bend. His connection with students and staff was remarkable. Everyone loved and respected him.

I am saddened by his passing and pray that you will be given the strength and courage to carry on. May your angels protect all of you, shelter you with their wings and may Our Lord fill your hearts with blessed peace.

With warm recollections of a wonderful person,

I remember when we all vacationed at Disney Vacation Club in 1999 and one evening I was seated next to Sam and we were chatting about "today's kids." I told him that in my day fear-and-better-judgement kept me from making many a mistake and asked what he thought of that philosophy. He softly answered, "I would never want to feel a child feared me....". That statement has stayed with me from that day to this. What a sweet, smart and kind man. I am so happy I had the privilege of meeting him. Sending my love to you Dee, Melba and all the family. Grief is long, and it is hard; but without all the wonderful memories made along the way there would be nothing to grieve. We are the lucky ones really and Sam is in God's arms now. It was an honor to work with this distinguished educator. Sam was a consummate professional gifted with good judgment and compassion for students. He left a fine legacy in the South Bend Schools. I was privileged to call him a colleague and friend.
