I have only happy memories of times with the Read family! Going out on runs in the big truck, or playing at The Plant were some more specific with him. Always kind and cheerful. A good father figure to all and a blessing to us all.

Lester was a great friend and next door neighbor for 28 years. He and his wife Sue always allowed the kids in the neighborhood to use a basketball goal in the alley. He was a kind man of God. Rest in piece my friend!

Sue and family,

We learned today of Les' passing and are saddened. We have known the two of you many years and have considered it a real privilege that God has placed you on our path in this life.

Les has been a model of being a husband, father and friend. We have one story in particular that we remember. When we lived in Argos, at one point we had two cows. One of them died and we had contacted Les to take care of it. At church the following Sunday Les told someone that the Schlegels had lost a half of their herd, leaving the impression we had several. Many laughs were shared over that! Les had a special laugh and that is a very pleasant memory.

Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you!

With love,
Don and Shirley

I never was fortunate enough to have the occasion to meet Mr. Reed and I am sorry for it. I just wanted to express my respect and appreciation for his service to this country during WW 11. We have deep admiration and thankfulness for his sacrifice and heroism in his participation in capturing Iwo Jima and in taking Mt. Suribichi. Please accept the condolences of my wife and I and our thanks for his service to our country. With gratitude, Jere & Karen Humphrey

May you and your family feel the support that surrounds you, especially from above. Les will be missed, his mission here is done, yet his work and presence has made an everlasting impression on this community. Thank you for sharing him with this community. God Bless

Larry and I too are saddened to read of Les' passing. We were fellow members of Trinity United Methodist Church and know that Les and his entire family were great contributors to the church in all ways.. We knew he was one of the original at Mt. Suribachi but never talked about it.(at least to us). He goes with those who have gone before him and we know they are there with open arms. Les put up a good fight just like those days long ago on Iwo Jima. We grieve with all of the Read family and their partners and children. Memories will be great with laughter and Les would have wanted that. With our love. Larry and Sue Chase and our family.

Thank you, Lester Read, for your service to our country and to the world. You truly are a member of the Greatest Generation. We've read your name in history; we've heard your name in TV specials about the raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi. No thanks can cover your sacrifice.

Our heartfelt condolences to the Lester Read family. We grieve with you and celebrate with you for a life well-lived.

Rest well, Marine, in your well-deserved peace.
