Joe and Kathleen were my first bosses at A&W and what fun bosses they were! I have some great memories of them both at work and as friends! My best memory of Joe at work was when he was making the root beer and stirring it with his unlit cigar in his mouth. My sincere condolences to the family. God Bless You Joe!!!

my memories of joe span almost 50 years from when my grandmother (halcie wilson) and i walked across michigan road for lunch at the root beer stand. as i got older...my teens i got the opportunity to play a lot of golf with joe at rushmore golf course...he always carried his clubs and walked the course....as i got older yet i had the opportunity to travel to las vegas with joe and others over superbowl weekend several times and really enjoyed myself...joe "never" missed mass on sunday morning when he was there!
i did not see much of joe after his 1st wife passed away and he relocated to south bend but i usually called him just before the superbowl started on superbowl sunday. my last chat was when joe was in donaldson...i stopped to see him while visiting the campus...we had a nice chat...his mind was still sharp. we could have talked for hours that day.
i have always considered joe a very good friend and i will miss him greatly...he truly was " 1 " of a kind!

To all of Joe's family,

What a wonderful legacy this man has left to you, his children and grandchildren. He loved his church, the sacraments and his family. He was always so positive, had a twinkle in his eye and a kind word for whoever he was speaking about.

We remember the days when Joe and Kathleen had the A&W drive-in north of Plymouth and the infamous "Pizza burgers" they made. Yum! Yum! There's never been another to match it.

We're sorry we will not be able to attend Joe's funeral, but we hold all of you in our hearts and our prayers. Peace be with you.

I worked next door at Wag's Standard Service.
Joe would many times bring me a hamburger, fries and a root beer, worried I didn't have anything to eat.
He was a very nice man and I have thought kindly of him through the years.
So sorry to hear of his passing, but glad that he lived such a long and wonderful life.
Sincerely, Blake Mevis

My first job was as a carhop at the A & W. I started in 1969 at the age of 13. I worked 3 summers for Joe & Kathleen and they were wonderful to work for. My sister also worked for them for 3 years. She started towards the end of the first season I worked there. I remember when my sister started working, Joe would put her on the schedule as "Diane's Little Sister". I don't think he actually used here name, LuAnn, until the next season. We talk often about the A & W days and we always end up laughing. They were great, fun days. I can remember the hot summers and the cold springs and falls, the busy times and the slower times, but all in all it was great. I made new friends and had lots of laughs. Today when I drive by Grace Baptist School, I still expect to see the A & W Root Beer Stand. When I think of Joe & Kathleen it is always good thoughts. I know my sister and I are not the only ones who fondly remember Joe & Kathleen and the A & W Days. Not sure you could find a better couple to start your working days with. We learned a lot of from those days. My condolences to their family. You have to be so proud of the lives your dad & mom touched and how they started them on the road to job responsibility and life.

I really liked Joe, we played many a round of golf together and he was fine player. He was a good person and I have thought of him many times since I moved to Fl. He had a good long life and now will be missed by all who was lucky enough to have know him.
