Carl was a humble man. He was a family man who was loved dearly by his wife, children, son-in-law and grandchildren. He never met a stranger. Once you meeting him you never forgot him or the man he was. He was a teacher and a leader of men. I worked with him, I ate with him and I played with him. He always saw the best in me and his fellow man. As many mistakes as I made in my life, Carl told me not to worry about it, that it would be OK and it would work out in the END. He said this with conviction because he belived and he lived his life in the footsteps of our Savior The Lord Jesus. He will be greatly missed by all. I especially am sadden, but in my heart I know and believe he is in heaven an sharing with the Angels and all who have gone before him. Ciao Bella my good friend!

Dear Larry, Sandy , Norma and others of the family:

My sister Ruth discovered the Obituary for Carl, and sent it to me a few days ago , with the notice of Carl's passing over. Though a bit late, I wanted to assure you of my condolances.

I believe I met Carl at the reunion, ??? Such a good looking young man. My youngest daughter is the same age as Carl.

I was so happy to read that Carl was a Christian, and active in his church. You have assurance that he is with his Savior Jesus Christ, and that we will see him again. . I am looking forward to that blessed time.

If I can find where to send a memorial gift for Carl, I would like to do that.

God bless each of you and I hope to see you again in due time.

With my love and prayers

Having just opened the latest Manchester College Alumni publication, I read that Carl passed away in September. Although I read this yesterday, Christmas Day, while in North Manchester, Indiana, at the home of my parents, Carl's former wrestling and football coach, Jim Gratz, I wanted to express my sorrow.

Playing football at Manchester College as a freshman (hate to admit, but back in 1971), Carl was my mentor linebacker. I admired him as a player and person and listened intently any time he spoke. His hard-nosed approach to practice and each game was what I watched and tried to emulate as a freshman.

Although I was no starter as a freshman, I did make the kick-off team, and, only through Carl mandating that I take his place during one of our early home games. After a short warm-up during half time (I think it was against Taylor!), Carl told me to go in for him for the kick off and stay in for the first series on defense as left-side outside linebacker. I asked him if he thought Coach Jarrett would be okay with this, and he said-"I don't care-just go in!". I ended up breaking up a pass, and getting lucky enough to string out an end sweep toward the Eel River and making a second tackle. That was enough. Carl came back in, but let me have his position for kick offs!

What a great guy. And, I would have wanted to have shared this in September, but only read the bulletin yesterday-at my dad's, Jim Gratz, Carl's former coach, while in North Manchester/Manchester College over Christmas. Probably fitting.
