A memorial service for Dorothy "Ruth" Cox, 98 who passed away on August 16th, will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 400 N. Michigan St. Plymouth on Saturday, October 27th at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m until time of services in the church. Pastors Larry Marhanka and Jeff Herron will officiate.
Ruth was the youngest of three daughters born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Arthur and Georgianna Chittick. At the age of 3 years, her family moved to Chicago, IL so her father could attend law school and later practice law.
She graduated from Maryville College in Maryville, TN in 1936, and one week later she married Leslie W. Cox on June 13, 1936 at a triple wedding with her two older sisters, Helen and Josephine. She and Les raised four children in Brookfield, IL and later retired and spent 32 years in Columbia, SC, spending their summers at her beloved Bass Lake in Knox, IN. Her grandparents had moved to Bass Lake in 1888 and opened the “Chittick Hotel”. Family members have spent many happy summers at the lake since then.
Her Christian life was so important to her, and she sang in her church choir for 70 years. She was a faithful choir member at First United Methodist Church in Plymouth until two years ago. She was an avid reader and also loved to dance, joining her grandchildren in many lively celebrations.
Ruth volunteered for 20 years at her local school as a kindergarten helper, along with all of her church mission projects, Habitat for Humanity, and cancer volunteering. Over the past 25 years she has made almost 800 baby blankets for “Birth Right” in Columbia, SC and later for “Women’s Care Center” in Plymouth. She cheerfully helped when asked. Her life was full and happy.
She is survived by her daughter Anne and (Fred) Benner of Plymouth, her youngest son Robert Cox or Columbia, SC, daughter-in-law Charlotte Cox of Laconia, NH, and daughter-in-law Ramona Cox of Columbia SC. Six grandchildren also survive: Karen and (Chad) Barden and children Kaylie, Annalise, Cole and Cray of Plymouth, Jason and (Courtney) Benner and children Grant and Reese Benner of Atlanta, GA, Lauren and (Benjamin) Escoto and children Anna, Emma and Caleb of Mexico City, Allison and (Scott) Snyder and daughter Lucinda of Henniker, NH, Amber and (Bobby) and children Moriyah and Liana of Columbia, SC and Kenneth Cox, stationed at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii.
